Brief history

Funded in 1904 the Office de l'Acétylène became the French Welding Technical Centre Institut de Soudure in 1935. The Institut de Soudure (IS) provides industry with technical support through R&D, Third Party Inspection and Non-Destructive Testing, Training and Education, Qualification and Certification of Personnel, in the field of joining and related technologies. The Groupe Institut de Soudure employs a staff of 680.

IS is a major training centre and a leading research and development laboratory. IS Services SA, a 100% IS subsidiary, provides industry with technical assistance and services.

The objectives of IS are focused on the study, the improvement, and the advancement of welded fabrication, technology transfers and, generally speaking, in the spread of knowledge. IS is well inserted in the welding world community and activities: it hosts the IIW general management board, is a member of several European and international organisations, and is strongly involved in welding education and training, certification and qualification.

A FSW Centre will be set up in 2002-2003 equipped with FSW machines allowing for 3D welding and long welds
